SWP Calculator — Systematic Withdrawal Plan

Withdraw a fixed amount every month from your investment and see how long the money lasts.

How to use the SWP Calculator

  1. Enter your total investment and the monthly amount you want to withdraw.
  2. Enter the expected yearly return and the number of years.
  3. See the balance left, total withdrawn and whether the money runs out.

About this tool

In a Systematic Withdrawal Plan, you invest a lump sum and take out a fixed amount every month while the rest stays invested. This calculator grows the balance by the monthly rate (yearly return ÷ 12) each month and then subtracts your withdrawal: balance = balance × (1 + r/12) − withdrawal. If the withdrawal is more than the monthly return, the corpus slowly shrinks; if it is less, the corpus keeps growing.

For example, ₹10 lakh earning 8% with ₹8,000 withdrawn every month lasts the full 10 years and still leaves about ₹7.6 lakh. SWPs are popular for regular retirement income. Real fund returns vary from year to year, and each withdrawal may attract capital-gains tax on the gains portion.

Frequently asked questions

How long will ₹10 lakh last with ₹10,000 monthly withdrawal?

At 8% a year it lasts almost 14 years (about 166 months). Use the calculator with your own return and amount to check.

Is SWP better than FD interest for monthly income?

An SWP from a mutual fund can be more tax-efficient because only the gains part of each withdrawal is taxed, but the returns are not guaranteed like an FD.

What is a safe withdrawal rate?

Many planners suggest withdrawing no more than 4–6% of the corpus a year, adjusted for inflation, so the money lasts through a long retirement.
