About this tool

New regime, FY 2025-26 (Budget 2025): 0–₹4 lakh nil, ₹4–8 lakh 5%, ₹8–12 lakh 10%, ₹12–16 lakh 15%, ₹16–20 lakh 20%, ₹20–24 lakh 25% and above ₹24 lakh 30%. Salaried people get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, and the Section 87A rebate (up to ₹60,000) makes tax nil when taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh — so a salary of ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief limits the tax to the income above ₹12 lakh. Example: salary ₹15,00,000 → taxable ₹14,25,000 → ₹20,000 + ₹40,000 + ₹33,750 = ₹93,750 + 4% cess = ₹97,500.

Old regime: 0–₹2.5 lakh nil (₹3 lakh for 60–79, ₹5 lakh for 80+), ₹2.5–5 lakh 5%, ₹5–10 lakh 20%, above ₹10 lakh 30%, a ₹50,000 standard deduction, a rebate making tax nil up to ₹5 lakh taxable income, and deductions such as 80C (₹1.5 lakh), 80D, HRA, home-loan interest (₹2 lakh) and NPS 80CCD(1B) (₹50,000). Both regimes add 4% health and education cess, and surcharge above ₹50 lakh (10%), ₹1 crore (15%), ₹2 crore (25%) and ₹5 crore (37% in the old regime, capped at 25% in the new), with marginal relief. This calculator covers normal-rate income of resident individuals; capital gains at special rates, agricultural income and employer NPS (80CCD(2)) are not included. It is an estimate — please verify with a CA or the income-tax e-filing portal.

Frequently asked questions

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in FY 2025-26?

Under the new regime, yes — taxable income up to ₹12 lakh has nil tax because of the 87A rebate. For salaried people that means a salary up to ₹12.75 lakh, thanks to the ₹75,000 standard deduction. It does not apply to special-rate income like capital gains.

How much tax on ₹15 lakh salary in the new regime?

Taxable income is ₹14,25,000 after the standard deduction. Tax is ₹93,750 plus 4% cess = ₹97,500 for FY 2025-26.

Which regime is better, old or new?

The new regime is better for most people unless they claim large deductions — typically HRA plus full 80C, 80D and home-loan interest. Enter your numbers to see the exact difference.

Can I switch between the old and new regime?

Salaried people without business income can choose either regime every year while filing their return. People with business income can switch back only once.
