About this tool
The mean is the sum divided by the count — what people usually call the average. The median is the middle value when numbers are sorted (or the mean of the two middle values), and it isn’t pulled up or down by a few extreme values, which is why salaries and house prices are often reported as medians. The mode is the value that appears most often; a list can have several modes or none.
Standard deviation shows how spread out the numbers are. Use the population version when your list is the whole group (all students in a class) and the sample version when it’s a sample from a bigger group.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the average of marks?
Add all the marks and divide by the number of subjects — or paste them here. 72, 85, 91, 66 and 85 average 79.8.
What’s the difference between mean and median?
The mean uses every value; the median is the middle value. With 10, 12 and 100, the mean is 40.7 but the median is 12.
What if no number repeats?
Then there is no mode, and the tool shows “none”.
